St Peters

Situated on the original grounds of a Presbyterian Ladies College in the early 1900s and then a Hospital for Sick Babies between 1915 and 1917, St Basil’s St Peters has had a privileged history of caring for the community. The grounds were purchased by St Basil’s in 1984 and provided care for 32 residents in the grand Victorian-era villa for over 30 years.

In 2017, a $10million refurbishment commenced behind the historic facade, to create 30 private single suites and one double suite, as well as many facilities that welcome all lifestyles, from social and interactive to quiet and introspective.

On a 2085sqm corner site in a quiet inner-city suburb, the design of the new boutique style residence at St Peters was guided by the Living Well vision; to encourage residents to move freely throughout the facility and its gardens and café, with dignity and supported independence.

Facilities

The interiors throughout St Basil’s St Peters are designed to be dementia-friendly in colours and patterns that are reminiscent of mid-century European homes but with a contemporary flourish. All fabrics are selected to suit their purpose from moisture wicking to sun resistant but pleasant to touch. Walls are predominantly white with an earthy pastel palette used for the feature walls in the bedrooms.

Over an area of 1070sqm, the Ground Floor is home to 13 single rooms with ensuites, the multi-faith Chapel, the approximately 105sqm Zoi Kafe, the reception area and 10sqm internal courtyard, and a dining area that spills into a library and lounge with folding glass doors that lead to a 25sqm plant-filled deck.

The first floor has a similar layout over 1809sqm but with 17 single rooms and one double bedroom, a dining area with a magnificent fish tank, a library and lounge that has unfettered access to a 77sqm, partially-covered balcony.

Each suite across the two floors is designed for peace and quiet, and is suitable for ambulant and mobility-compromised adults. Single bedrooms are furnished with:

  • A solid timber-finished electric bed and pressure-relieving mattress;
  • Two pillows;
  • A quilted bedspread;
  • A bedside table with lockable drawer;
  • A built-in wardrobe and recessed bookshelf;
  • An armchair; and
  • A combination of motorised shutters, blinds and sheer curtains.

They each feature plentiful electrical outlets; a smart TV with internet, Skype and Greek TV connections available; an individual split-system air-conditioner; adjustable lighting; a private 5sqm ensuite that is predominantly white with bespoke cabinetry, accessible toilet, large shower, wall railings, sensor lighting, and anti-slip flooring; and a nurse-call alert.

The double bedroom features two of each feature but with a shared ensuite.

The corridors that connect the bedrooms and living areas are carpeted to assist with softening the acoustics associated with vibrant living areas; light pours in from predominantly southern-facing windows. CCTV operates throughout the common and outside areas providing further security and support to encourage independent resident movement and interaction.

Mono-tone frosted botanical illustrations are applied to all floor-ceiling windows that require privacy to comply with council regulations, with a leadlight-like feature window reminiscent of a William Morris design at the end of the Upstairs main corridor. The botanical theme is continued throughout the facility on all large expanses of glass to allow for privacy and to meet building regulations, while simultaneously allowing for filtered light.

Services

St Basil's St Peters is staffed around the clock with a dedicated team providing nursing and personal care services, an on-site chef, laundry and maintenance crew. Doctors, allied health practitioners, including podiatrists, an onsite hair salon and local Chaplains attend St. Peters on a regular basis to ensure our residents are able to maintain their best possible physical, social and spiritual health.

Activities

At St Basil’s St Peters, there are activities and facilities to suit everyone.

Zoi Kafe is set behind the lead light glass of the original bay window and serves barista coffee and house-made treats. With its buffet of vintage games and live art demonstrations, Zoi Kafe is a much-anticipated destination for families, friends and the local community - making social interaction a focus at St Basil’s St Peters, where the indoors open freely to the outdoors.

A large deck accessed from inside via Zoi Kafe, leads over 100sqm of well-maintained, landscaped gardens with wide walking paths suitable for wheelchairs and walking. A wisteria-covered pergola, BBQ facilities, raised vegetable beds and a large chicken coop adds to the activities and ambience of the gardens along with various outdoor settings offering multiple rest and shaded areas. The site-wide nurse call monitoring system ensures that residents can be located at all times (both indoors and out).

The gardens are bounded by solid rendered pillars interspersed with widely-spaced, contemporary steel posts, through which residents can enjoy views of a popular primary school and its oval diagonally opposite as well as interact with walkers and neighbours. Public access to the gardens is only possible once a guest has signed in at Reception.

Through Zoi Kafe, or directly from the Ground Floor accommodation corridor, residents have access to an in-house multi-faith Chapel for services and quiet reflection. With vaulted ceilings typical of Gothic architecture, and period windows revealing the gardens, the Chapel has a contemporary yet classical fitout with 32 seats and standing room at the rear.

The lift to the Basement opens to a large area that leads into a spacious gym with a light well, the Beehive Salon, a large hobbies/activities room, a mini-kitchen, and a cinema for 17 guests replete with heavy velvet curtains, Gold class style armchairs, and a ceiling that twinkles like night stars, with bathroom facilities adjacent.
