St Basil’s Homes (SA) aims to provide you with the best possible quality aged care service within a culturally appropriate environment. We deliver care that enhances dignity, independence, and quality of life for everyone we support.

To provide our services to you, we ask that you give us certain information. The information you provide to us can include name, address, age, and contact details, as well as health and other sensitive information.

We understand that your personal information is private. We are committed to protecting it and making sure it is not misused.

This Privacy Statement sets out St Basil’s Homes (SA) commitment to your privacy and the protection of your personal information against misuse.

St Basil’s Homes (SA) is committed to protecting your privacy and complying with the Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles.

The Australian Privacy Principles control the way St Basil’s Homes (SA) can collect, store, use, and disclose your personal information.

Aged Care Act 2024

Section 168 of the Aged Care Act sets specific requirements for how we protect and use your information. In compliance with section 168, we will:

      • only use your information to provide your care, or otherwise for the reason it was given to us;
      • only share your information with others where it is needed for your care, with your consent, or where the law allows or requires it; and
      • take steps to keep your information safe and protect it from being lost, misused or accessed by people who are not authorised to access it.

We have systems and processes in place to make sure we meet these requirements.

Employee Responsibilities

All our employees and contractors must respect your privacy and protect the confidentiality of your information, as required by law. Other people who lawfully access your personal information must meet similar requirements.

What Information We Collect

The kind of personal information St Basil’s Homes (SA) holds is:

      • names and contact details;
      • information about individuals’ cultural and religious background and preferred language;
      • contact details for family members, representatives, guardians and attorneys;
      • health information and care-related information;
      • financial and payment information;
      • photographs and video (for example, from events or activities).

We may also operate closed circuit television (CCTV) in our premises to support safety and security. We do not use CCTV in resident rooms.

How We Use Personal Information

The health and other personal information we keep in your medical record and care plan helps us plan your care. We ask for this information and record it so that you can receive proper care and treatment. This includes our employees communicating with other medical and allied health professionals involved in your care. The information in your record and care plan is also made available to the Government agencies that assess the cost of your care and fund or subsidise these costs.

General Communications

We keep residents, family members, employees, and volunteers informed about what is happening at St Basil’s Homes (SA), including updates from the Chief Executive, site newsletters, invitations to events, alerts, news, surveys, and other general communications. We send these by email, and some information is also displayed on site noticeboards.

Email addresses provided by you and your family at the time of admission are entered into our communications system automatically so that you can start to receive general updates as and when they are published. You can unsubscribe to these communications at any time by clicking the ‘unsubscribe’ link at the bottom of the latest communications you receive.

Storage and Disposal

The information we collect about you is stored securely either where you live or in our computer system. It can only be destroyed after the required retention period has passed. In most cases, this is seven years.

Disclosure

We only pass on information about you if it is authorised by you or by law. Whenever appropriate, we remove details which identify you.

In some situations, we may disclose confidential or personal information without consent, for example where someone’s life or health is at serious risk. Information may be disclosed to organisations such as hospitals, medical practitioners, pharmacies, and other health care providers.

Access to Personal Information

You can access your personal information by making a written request to St Basil’s Homes (SA). In general, we will respond within five working days. We may charge a small fee to retrieve the information.

If you think information that we hold about you is inaccurate or incomplete, you can ask us to correct it. In some cases, where the law allows, we may not agree to your request. If this happens, you can ask for a note to be added to the information outlining your view. You can also seek support from an aged care advocacy service.
