Living Philotimo

Philotimo is a Greek word that cannot easily be translated into English. However, it is best described, as a deep-seated awareness in the heart that motivates the good that someone does.

A Philotimo person always acts with kindness, goodness, respect, compassion and honour, doing what’s right for their family and community without expecting anything in return.

At St Basil’s, many individuals in our service display these values, however each year we present one special person or group, with the St Basil’s Maria Nikos Philotimo Award.

Maria Nikos was an invaluable member of our team who worked across all three of our homes for over 23 years. Maria was known for her dedication, can-do attitude and her love for our residents. She always brought a sense of joy and enthusiasm to the workplace and was respected by everyone in St Basil’s and the broader community.

Maria was the inaugural winner of the Philotimo award in 2018, and after her passing, we named the award in her honour.

We also celebrate our success with annual Team Awards to honour those that go above and beyond to make St Basil’s a place where residents feel cared for, staff feel supported, and our values shine every day.
